Day 01 Arrive Delhi Welcome to India! One of our local representatives will be waiting to greet you in the arrivals hall after you’ve cleared immigration and custom formalities to assist you for the transfer and check in to your hotel. India’s capital and a major gateway to the country, contemporary Delhi is today a truly cosmopolitan city that juxtaposes and successful combines modern and ancient in a unique heritage. After checking in to your hotel, the rest of today is free to rest and relax after your flight, ready for tomorrow. Relax by the pool, visit the spa, head to the rooftop bar or enjoy dinner at one of several restaurants, with plenty of options from classic to casual. For the next two days you’ll be staying at the wonderful 5 star luxury The Oberoi New Delhi. Ranked Number 1 City Hotel in Delhi, The Oberoi, New Delhi has views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Humayun’s Tomb on one side and a calming view of the forested golf course on the other. This morning after breakfast, your tour starts with a visit to some of the intriguing and enchanting sights of the national capital. Visit the 17th century Jama Masjid, Delhi’s oldest mosque, the largest in India is highly decorated and a beautiful oasis of calm in the city. The marble and red sandstone building has numerous entrance gates, four watch towers and two minarets. Designed by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who also built the Red Fort and the Taj Mahal, it was built between 1644 and 1658 and can hold up to 25000 people. After time at Jama Masjid, we’ll head to bustling Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Delhi, where you’ll explore some of the narrow, winding lanes of Old Delhi on a rickshaw ride – a great way to see and experience more. We’ll also stop in front of the Mughal Empire’s most opulent fort, the Red Fort for a photo stop as we head onwards to visit Raj Ghat, where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. Located on the banks of the Yamuna River, this outdoor complex houses the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. Later we’ll proceed to New Delhi where we’ll drive past the Presidential Palace, the one-time imperial residence of the British viceroys, as well as the India Gate, a memorial raised in honour of the Indian soldiers martyred during the Afghan war and drive along the Rajpath past the Parliament House and secretarial buildings. Enjoy an afternoon visit to the 16th century Humayun’s Tomb, a precursor to the Taj Mahal as well as Qutub Minar, the 12th century tower of victory built by a slave king and the prototype of all minars (towers) in India. Humayun’s Tomb is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is important as an architectural landmark in the development of Mughal architecture and garden tomb style. It inspired the construction of the Taj Mahal and is the final resting place of Emperor Humayun, who was the second Mughal emperor of India. It’s a place of pilgrimage and an important symbol of India’s history and heritage. Qutub Minar is another important UNESCO World Heritage Site and landmark in Delhi. It’s a unique mix of Islamic and Hindu architecture and is the tallest minaret in the world. Red sandstone and white marble were two of the most prominently used building materials in the Mughal era and Mughal structures have retained their regal appearance. The massive red & white structures adorned with intricate carvings, laid out geometrically, are truly a sight to behold. Visit an 8th generation ittar studio where you will get to smell a wide range of ittars and mix your own unique perfume that can be named after you! Walk the streets of Chandni Chowk which in their glory years, were adorned with silver and gold jewellery in the midst of shops selling the most delectable food. Today, chaos thrives in the area, but as you walk down the street you’re transported by the magic in the air to the era of Mughals. Take a rickshaw through the streets, a great way to explore this area. Visit one of the oldest wrestling schools in India and understand how the touch of everyday generosity can change our lives when you visit the oasis of service - the Bangla Sahib gurudwara.
This morning you’ll be transferred to Nizamuddin Railway station to board the Gatimaan Express train to Agra, departing 0810am arriving 0950. Once a small village on the banks of the Yamuna river, Agra was transformed by two great Mughal monarchs, Akbar and his grandson Shah Jehan into the second capital of the Mughal Empire – Dar-ul-Khilafat, or ‘seat of the Emperor’ in the 16th & 17th century. You’ll be met arrival in Agra to begin with a guided visit of the impressive Agra Fort. The fort is approached by two imposing gates and constructed of red sandstone. The citadel was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar between the years 1565 and 1573. Encircled by a moat, this dramatic city within a city was the palace of three emperors, Akbar, Shah Jehan and Aurangzeb, each of whom made significant contributions to the wonderful architecture of the inner buildings – a combination of Persian (Islamic) and local Hindu styles. After your visit here we’ll head to your hotel where you’ll be able to check in and rest and relax. Late afternoon today, your guide will meet you at the hotel and accompany you for a sunset visit of the splendid Taj Mahal. Built as an impressive and timeless monument of eternal love and demonstration of power, the Taj Mahal monument is described by poet Rabindranath Tagore as "a teardrop on the cheek of time". This magnificent 17th century mausoleum was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, as an expression of love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal in the mid-17th century. It is made of milk-white makrana marble and is truly one of the wonders of the world. Though the Taj appears to be amazingly perfect from almost any angle, it is the close-up marble inlay work, which is astounding. Be mesmerized by this outstanding piece of architecture. After breakfast, it’s time to check out and begin the drive to Jaipur – around 250km and approximately 5 hours. En route we’ll stop to visit Fatehpur Sikri. Listed amongst the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Fatehpur Sikri is one of the best-preserved examples of Mughal architecture in India. Some of the must visit monuments in Fatehpur Sikri are: Buland Darwaza, Diwan-i-Khas- Hall, Panch Mahal, Tomb of Salim Chisti, the Palace of Jodha Bai and Diwan-i-Aam. Following your visit and time exploring here, we continue the drive to reach Jaipur. Founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727, Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, is planned according to Indian Vastu Shastra. It’s the only city in the world symbolising the nine divisions of the Universe through nine rectangular sectors sub-dividing it. The city is steeped in history and culture. The palaces and forts of yesteryear that were witness to royal splendour and processions are now living monuments. Except for the busy traffic of bicycles, cars and buses, little seems to have changed. This fascinating city with its romantic charm takes you back to an epoch of royalty and tradition. Today is a chance to explore the forts, palaces, museums and markets of Jaipur. After an early breakfast your day begins with a visit to the magnificent hilltop fortress and palace complex at Amber Fort. A jeep will take you up to Amber Fort and once at the top, enjoy a stroll through the sprawling complex of courtyards and halls where your guide will explain more of the intricate designs and history. This afternoon visit the City Palace, another impressive and overwhelming complex of exquisite palaces, gardens and courtyards, decorative art and carved doorways. After your visit to City Palace, you’ll also be able to visit Jaipur's Jantar Mantar, the most famous of five observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh in India. Jai Singh was a great admirer of progress and research made in the fields of science and technology and was passionate about astronomy. Today you’ll also be able to see the ‘Palace of Winds’, also known as Hawa Mahal as we drive past this beautiful and elaborate façade, extremely intricate in its pink sandstone carving. These traditions continue to this day and as a result modern day Jaipur is considered by many as the craft capital of India. Traditional methods are still used to produce many valuable and highly prized items. Using skills passed down through generations, artisans and master craftsmen can be seen in the areas of Ghat Darwaza and Vishveshwar ji. On this fascinating evening walk, you’ll mingle and talk with the locals whilst sampling some of the regions culinary delights; try pakoras, aloo tiki, samosa and sweets from some of the city’s most popular street food vendors. Observe local artisans in their workshops; jewellers and silversmiths, gold and silver foil makers. After breakfast, it’s time to begin the drive of around 395km, taking 7 to 8 hours. Udaipur is also known as the ‘City of Lakes’ and considered as one of the most romantic cities of India. It’s a long drive but we’ll stop en route at Ranakpur to see the beautiful and elaborately carved white marble temples. Guides are not allowed inside the temple premises so you’ll be provided with an audio guide to accompany you. Ranakpur is the largest Jain temple complex in India and dates to the 15th century. The main temple is dedicated to Adinath, the first Tirthankar. Intricate carvings detail mythological figures, patterns and motifs on the walls, pillars and domes. There are 1444 ornately carved marble pillars in the complex and none of them are similar. The beautiful lace-like interiors of the domes are a superb example of western Indian temple style. Surya temple and other Jain temples are side attractions. Please Note: Temples open only at 1200 hrs. Leather belts, footwear, bare legs and black clothing are not allowed. After your visit to Ranakpur we continue on to Udaipur. Udaipur is a fascinating blend of sights, sounds and experiences. The city is based around the water lakes, hemmed in by the lush hills of the Aravalis. Regarded as one of the most romantic cities in India, it is often called the “Venice of the East” or the “Lake City”. The kaleidoscope of fairy-tale palaces, lakes, temples, gardens and narrow lanes strewn with stalls, carry the flavour of a heroic past, epitomizing valour and chivalry. Udaipur is also a centre for performing arts, crafts and its famed miniature paintings. Arriving into Udaipur you will be assisted by our representative for your check-in at the hotel with the rest of your evening at leisure to rest and relax. Get ready to explore one of the most scenic cities of Rajasthan. Begin your visit with the City Palace and Museum. The largest palace complex in India, it’s a wonderful blend of Mughal and Rajput influences. The City Palace houses a crystal gallery, which boasts of royal artifacts and the world’s largest private collection of crystals. Today you’ll also visit the 17th century Jagdish temple, enjoy a scenic drive around Fatehsagar Lake, and visit the Sahelion ki Bari (the Garden for the Maids of Honour), an ornamental pleasure garden with fountains and marble kiosks. This evening enjoy a shared boat ride on the 4 km long and 3 km wide Lake Pichola, a beautiful lake fringed with hills, palaces, havelis, ghats, embankments and temples, with spectacular views of the city from the lake. Today you’ll be transferred to Udaipur airport to connect with the short flight to Mumbai – departing 1440 arriving at 1555. On arrival to Mumbai you’ll be met and assisted with the transfer and check in to your hotel. The rest of your afternoon and evening is at leisure to rest and relax. Optional tour - Mumbai By Dawn – available on request Get up at the crack of dawn for an exclusive peek into the underbelly of the city, and insights into what makes this magnificent city tick. The tour starts with the newspaper vendor-distribution network. Next, men and women bargain with the wholesale fruit and vegetable vendors to pick up fresh produce for the day ahead. Visit Sassoon docks to see how 10 to 20 tonnes of fish arrive in the city every day. Finally see the glimpses of daily lives that most visitors never get to see - bread-boys carrying fresh bread, the milkman riding past with milk canisters, the flower market, and green fresh vegetable market. It may be an early start but well worth it. If you decide not to opt for the Mumbai by Dawn optional experience, your morning begins after breakfast with a great half day sightseeing tour of Mumbai including visiting the Gateway of India. This was the monument that visitors arriving by boat would have first seen in the city of Bombay. Its design is a combination of both Hindu and Muslim architectural styles with the arch in Muslim style while the decorations are Hindu style. Later we’ll drive past the exclusive Malabar Hills area. The colonial bungalows that peppered the hillside in the 18th century have now been replaced by the apartment blocks of Mumbai and Victoria Terminus. You’ll also visit the Mani Bhavan today – the old Mumbai residence of Mahatma Gandhi. It's a pretty, two-storied structure that now houses a reference library with over 2000 books, a photo exhibition of the Mahatma's life, and well-preserved memorabilia, including an old charkha or spinning wheel that Gandhi used to use. Another interesting site is the Dhobi Ghat [open laundry] and a chance to visit the Dabbawallas [tiffin delivery people – not operational on Sundays, 2nd & 4th Saturdays of the month & any State and National holiday]. The Dabbawallas constitute a unique lunchbox delivery and return system that delivers hot lunches from homes and restaurants to people at work.
