The Khumai Danda Trek is a hidden gem of the Annapurna region in Nepal, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure and cultural experiences. This is one of the newer trekking trails that have been opened, on the south side of Machhapuchare (Fishtail Peak). Trek through diverse landscapes, with beautiful peak and valley views and quiet, less visited trails. Whether you’re a trekker, nature lover or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, Khumai Danda is a destination worth exploring. Unlike better known destinations, the Khumai Danda trek offers a serene and untouched experience of the Himalayas. As this is just a short trek, it's a great option for first time trekkers, for families and for those with limited time but wanting a great Himalayan experience. As well as time in the Annapurna National Park and Conservation Area, you'll also have time to explore and enjoy the beautiful lakeside resort city of Pokhara, gateway to the Annapurnas and to visit key cultural and spiritual sites in Kathmandu at the start and end of your trip.
Namaste! Welcome to Nepal. One of our local team will be waiting to welcome you at the airport, for the transfer drive to your hotel. The traffic can be busy but there's lots to see enroute, providing a little bit of an insight into daily life in the capital. Arriving at your hotel, the rest of your day is free to rest and relax, enjoy the pool and other hotel facilities or perhaps explore locally. This evening we invite you to a complimentary welcome dinner and cultural show at one of the best traditional restaurants in Kathmandu. Rest and relax overnight, Kathmandu.
This morning you'll be picked up for the short scenic drive of around 1 to 2 hours to reach Ghachok village, the start point for your trek into the beautiful Annapurna National Park and Conservation Area. The trek begins with the trail heading gently uphill through mixed forest and traditional villages to reach Chichimley, a traditional Gurung village, where you can experience the local culture and hospitality. It's around 4 to 5 hours to reach the village where we'll rest overnight. This evening is free to rest and relax with your trek crew setting up camp and preparing the evening meal. Overnight at tented camp.
After breakfast at camp, it's time to begin today's trek, this time through landscapes of lush rhododendron forests, terraced fields and farmland and small villages offering the first views of the snow capped Annapurna mountain range. About 4 to 5 hours of walking brings you to Khumai Danda, a place known for its beautiful panoramic views of the Annapurna and Lamjung Himal mountain ranges. Rest and relax here, take in the views and explore locally. Overnight at tented camp.
It's worth getting an early start today for the short hike up to Korchan Danda (3,700m), a high-altitude ridge offering breathtaking mountain views. We'll take a packed breakfast with us for the 2 to 3 hours needed, to enjoy the magnificent sunrise views over Machhapuchre (Fishtail Peak), Annapurna South and Himchuli peaks. After sunrise views and breakfast we'll follow the trail down, descending for around 4 hours to reach the small village of Mirsha, another tranquil place, surrounded by nature. Rest and relax and take in the beautiful views and peaceful surroundings. Overnight at tented camp.
Today is a very easy short day to finish the trek. We'll start late morning for the trek of around 30 minutes to Kharpani, where you can relax in the natural hot springs. After spending time in the hotsprings, we head to the pick up point for the scenic drive of around 2 hours back to the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara. The rest of your day is free to rest and relax, to browse the local shops, perhaps take a boat ride or walk along the shores of Lake Phewa or simply relax at the hotel. Overnight at hotel, Pokhara.
As per your flight time, your guide will meet you at the hotel and assist you with your transfer to the domestic airport for the short flight of around 30 minutes back to Kathmandu. Once you arrive in Kathmandu, your car will be waiting for the short transfer drive to your hotel with the rest of today at leisure to rest and relax, explore locally or perhaps do any last minute souvenir shopping or exploring. Overnight at hotel, Kathmandu.
This morning is at leisure until time to check out and head to the airport. If your flight departs later this evening please let us know if you need late check out from your hotel - subject to availability and additional charge. When time to leave for Tribhuvan International Airport, you'll be transferred around three hours before your departure flight.
The best time for the Khumai Danda Trek in Nepal is during the spring (March to early May) and autumn (late September to end of November) seasons. These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and the best views of the Annapurnas, Fishtail Peak and the surrounding peaks.
The Khumai Danda trek is considered easy to moderate. It's a short trek of a few days, suitable for beginners, for older travellers and for families including with young children. As with all treks in the Himalayas there are some ascents and descents but only one day when you are above 3000m on this trek and with a hike up to a ridge area in early morning for sunrise views over the surrounding mountain peaks.
The Khumai Danda trek is not as well known or popular as better known treks such as the Annapurna Circuit or Annapurna Base Camp treks. It is one of the more recently opened trek routes in the Annapurna region and is considered a hidden gem, with quiet trails and tranquil untouched nature.
Yes, all foreign travellers need a visa to enter Nepal. You can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Kathmandu Airport or apply online in advance. One Himalaya can assist with visa information and travel arrangements.
The highest altitude on the Khumai Danda trek is 3700m which is during the morning hike up to Korchan Danda high altitude ridge to enjoy the breathtaking sunrise views over the surrounding mountain peaks. All our treks are carefully planned to include appropriate rest and acclimatisation days where necessary for a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.
Yes the Khumai Danda trek is a great option for families including with young children. It's a short trek of a few days on good trails through unspoiled nature with regular rests during the trekking time and only a few ascents and descents with no major challenging terrain or climbs.
Pack warm clothing, down jacket, sturdy hiking boots, a sleeping bag, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a personal first-aid kit. Layering is key due to varying temperatures whilst trekking in the Himalayas. Sleeping bags and down jackets can be hired locally if required, at low cost. When you book with us, we provide a suggested list of clothing and equipment specific to your booking.
Absolutely, yes this is a great option for beginners, or for those with limited time, as well as for families. This is a beautiful short trek of just a few days and is graded easy to moderate with no major steep or challenging sections but with some ascents and descents as is typical of any trek in the Himalayas. No major fitness or training is required but we do recommend preparing for all treks, for example through regular walking including on routes with steps or ascents and descents. Training beforehand will help you enjoy the trek to Khumai Danda comfortably but isn't a necessity for this short trek.
The Khumai Danda trek is one of the newer trekking routes to have opened in the Annapurna region, in a less visited area. Currently the local mountain lodges and guesthouses in this area are very limited and with very basic facilities. For that reason we run the Khumai Danda trek as a camping style trek. As well as your expert professional local Sherpa guide, you will also be accompanied by a small trek crew who are responsible for putting up and taking down the tents and other facilities for this camping style trek. The crew includes a cook and assistant who will prepare your meals freshly each day, taking into account your preferences.
One Himalaya specialises in creating safe, well-organised, and unforgettable trekking experiences, cultural tours, safaris and other activities in the Himalayas.
