Under current rules, if visiting Tibet from Nepal, you will need to be in Nepal a minimum of 5 working days (Monday to Friday) before travelling onwards to Tibet, in order to complete visa formalities which require your passport. If travelling from China (for example Beijing or Chengdu) you will need to be there a minimum of 2 working days in order to complete visa formalities, before travelling to Tibet. During these times you'll be able to enjoy cultural tours, treks or other activities and we'll be happy to discuss options. For example you could enjoy a few days cultural tour and/or trek in Nepal then return to Kathmandu and fly to Lhasa. If travelling from Chengdu, you could enjoy 1 or 2 days cultural tour during the time you need to wait before your Tibet visa and travel permit is issued, before you fly to Lhasa.
The new visa and travel permit rules for Tibet (as of January 2024) mean that travellers entering from Nepal can only enter under a group visa with minimum group size 5. However if you aren't an existing group of 5 or more, you may be able to join with other travellers as a group. For solo travellers, two people travelling together or groups less than 5, you can enter via China without the group visa requirements. Contact us and we can discuss the best options.
